Crazy, Stupid Love

Steve Carell, Julianne More, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this romantic comedy about a man whose wife cheats on him and wants a divorce.  The news shatters poor Cal Weaver’s (Steve Carell) heart and he doesn’t know what to do with himself.  Cal spends his nights in a bar complaining about his wife and her lover, David Linghagen (Kevin Bacon), when he is approached by a young player, Jacob (Ryan Gosling), who wants to help him out.  Cal is taught how to dress, talk, and act in order to pick up women at the bar.  Meanwhile, Cal’s wife is also trying to move on and attempts to date her fling David, but something just isn’t right.  Their son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) is also trying to convince his babysitter Jessica (Analeigh Tipton), that they are soul mates, but she is in love with his father, Cal.

Hannah (Emma Stone) is fresh out of law school and studying for the bar when she realizes that her relationship with Richard (Josh Groban) is going nowhere.  As she finally comes to terms with this realization, she decides to have a one night fling with the hot guy at the bar, Jacob, who tried to hit on her earlier.  She allows Jacob to put on his best moves for her and they end up have a great evening without sex.

The movie is focused on Cal and Emily (Julianne Moore) primarily with the Cal/Jacob story as the secondary plot.  There are plenty of funny moments in this movie and Carell delivers a brilliant performance.  There are also appearances by Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinnie) and John Caroll Lynch (Zodiac).  Overall, the movie is well paced, full of laughs as well as serious moments, and ends in a nice twist.  If you can handle Steve Carell (and I know some people can’t) then Crazy, Stupid Love is well worth your time to watch.  If you can’t handle Steve Carell, this isn’t the typical role for him and I would recommend giving it a try.  For me, Crazy, Stupid Love is worth a Large Popcorn.
